Dwight and Sabrina sold their home last summer in Calgary and stayed with family while they paid off some debts. They were self-employed with incorporated companies and only had five per cent for a down payment. In fall of 2016, they could easily find the acreage-type property that they could afford close to the city. They needed the acreage close to Calgary so they could store their equipment. They were looking for the perfect property. By the time that they did, the new mortgage rules came into place and they no longer qualified. The new rules drastically cut down the mortgage they needed, and now they have to find a property outside of the city, or buy one that doesn’t meet their needs. They are now waiting to buy a place, which has put a lot of stress on the family since they are camping at someone else’s home till they find something to suit their needs.
